The coconut or palm sugar which is an ingredient of Oriflakes products is made of coconut or palm tree sap. Eventhough they look almost the same, coconut or palm sugar is different from brown sugar.
Coconut Palm Sugar vs Brown Sugar
Coconut or palm sugar is made of sap, a liquid produced from both coconut trees (Cocos Nucifera) and palm trees or “kolang kaling” (Arenga Pinnata). Although their look and manufacturing process are relatively the same, namely through the dehydration or boiling process, both have differences.
First, coconut palm sugar is made of only sap without any additional substances and does not change chemically, while brown sugar is added with granulated or refined sugar. Second, brown sugar is more reddish in color than coconut sugar, which is slightly brownish. Third, brown sugar is denser or harder than coconut sugar. Fourth, when it is melted brown sugar is more liquid and tastes sweeter, while coconut sugar tends to be thicker.
Coconut trees (Cocos Nucifera) and palm trees (Arenga Pinnata) both belong to the aren-arenan family (Arecaceae). These two trees are both known as multipurpose trees because almost all parts of the tree can be used for various purposes. In Indonesia, coconut and palm trees are known by some different terms. Among them are nyiur, nyuh (Bali), nau, biluluk, kabung, ijuk (Sumatra), akol, akere, indu (Sulawesi), and moka, tuwak (Nusa Tenggara).
Coconut palm sugar made of coconut or palm trees is rich in nutrients and has many health benefits. Coconut sugar also has a lower glycemic index than other types of sugar. The glycemic index is a measure showing the increase in a person’s blood sugar levels after consuming certain foods.
Coconut palm sugar provides various types of essential nutrients needed by the body. These various important nutrients are:
Note: coconut palm sugar is better and healthier than any other sugars because it is not refined or chemically modified and it contains no artificial ingredients. Quoted from Boldsky, coconut palm sugar provides more vitamins and minerals than white or rafination sugar.
Insulin fiber contained in coconut palm sugar can help slow down glucose absorption, which is very good for diabetics. According to the American Diabetes Association, diabetics can use coconut palm sugar as a sweetener for their diabetes diet, but use it in moderation because it contains about 15 calories and 4 grams of carbohydrates just like regular refined sugar.
Coconut palm sugar has a relatively low glycemic index compared to refined sugar. Foods with a high glycemic index can increase blood sugar levels.
Fructose is a sugar variant that is easily converted by the body into fat. Fructose can not be broken down quickly and the liver will help break it down which leads to the formation of triglycerides.
Increased triglycerides in the blood can cause high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, high levels of bad cholesterol, and low levels of good cholesterol. Coconut sugar contains about 20% – 30% fructose and 70% – 75% sucrose.
Coconut palm sugar which contains less fructose will help reduce weight gain and fat accumulation. Fructose obtained from fruits is healthy and good. But high fructose levels obtained from refined sugar are not healthy.
The fiber present in coconut palm sugar has the ability to nurture the growth of intestinal bifidobacteria. These bifidobacteria are known to help restore good bacteria in the gut and also boost your immunity.
The iron content in coconut palm sugar helps improve blood circulation, which in turn increases oxygenation and nutrient availability. According to the Food and Research Institute, iron and zinc in coconut palm sugar are found to be about twice higher than granulated sugar. Iron plays an important role in the formation of red blood cells. Low red blood cells can lead to anemia, including muscle weakness, headaches, fatigue, and digestive problems.
Coconut palm sugar contains raw materials that help increase energy. This raw material takes a long time to process in the body. That means energy metabolism is more consistent and lasts longer throughout the day.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations names coconut palm sugar the most sustainable sweetener in the world. Coconut palm sugar production uses less water and fuel than sugarcane production.
According to the Ultimate Paleo Guide, for those who are on a Paleo diet, coconut palm sugar is an option that can be used to satisfy sweetness.
